US President Donald Trump announced that, following a missile attack by the Islamic Republic targeting American forces in Jordan, it is now Washington’s “turn” to respond. He stated that Tehran had asked the US not to attack, but affirmed that, following the launch of five missiles at American targets, a US military response was imminent.
Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office on Wednesday, Trump said:
“We’re going to hit them very hard because now it’s our turn to hit them. They know this is going to happen. They asked us not to do it, but on Tuesday evening, they tried to launch attacks.”
He added that the Islamic Republic had launched five missiles travelling at an estimated 8,500 miles per hour, but noted that all five were intercepted and destroyed.
Trump continued: “Regardless, they fired them, so now it’s our turn. We’ll see whether, at some point, we reach an agreement or not.”
