Gauteng Education MEC Lebogang Maile says the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls' transition to a national scholarship programme will expand educational opportunities for academically talented young women across South Africa.
The Gauteng MEC for Education, Lebogang Maile, has welcomed Oprah Winfrey’s announcement regarding the next chapter of the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls (OWLAG), which will close in its current form and transition into a nationwide scholarship programme.
After nearly two decades, the academy will end operations as a single boarding school campus by late 2027 and move to an expanded scholarship model.
The shift marks a significant new chapter in the institution’s journey and its contribution to girls’ education in South Africa.
Maile said the transition marked the evolution of one of South Africa’s most remarkable educational partnerships.
