The school was launched in 2007 following discussions with Nelson Mandela, who emphasised the importance of educating young women. Winfrey's commitment to educating South African girls will continue through an expanded national scholarship programme, supporting academically talented students at leading schools across the country. More than 500 girls have graduated from the academy, with many attending top universities in South Africa, the United States, and Europe. The 52-acre campus will be taken over by the Gauteng provincial government, and all currently enrolled students are assured of completing their education with uninterrupted financial support.
