SARS tax season scams on the rise: Fake refunds, phishing emails and eFiling hijacks target taxpayers
The Southern African Fraud Prevention Service (SAFPS) has warned taxpayers to be vigilant during tax season, saying cybercriminals are using convincing scams designed to mimic legitimate South African Revenue Service (SARS) communication.
With SARS continuing to simplify tax filing through digital services and pre-assessments, fraudsters are adapting their tactics to target unsuspecting taxpayers.
SAFPS chief executive Manie van Schalkwyk said tax season consistently attracts criminals looking to exploit consumers.
"Scammers are constantly adapting their methods, making it essential for consumers to understand the latest tactics and remain alert throughout the filing process," he said.
