South Africa’s proposed R500 Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) fee is shining the spotlight on international travel requirements and the countries whose citizens may be required to complete additional entry steps before visiting the country.
The Department of Home Affairs is expanding its digital immigration system to replace traditional paper-based processes with an online travel authorisation platform.
The system was initially introduced for travellers from countries including China, India, Indonesia and Mexico, but now has plans to extend it to more nationalities.
This means the proposed fee would affect travellers who are required to obtain an ETA before entering South Africa, including certain visitors who currently enjoy visa-free access.
