For many Africans, international travel still means applying for a visa well before departure. While some passports offer broad travel freedom through visa-free entry or visas on arrival, the majority across the continent remain subject to stricter travel restrictions.
According to the 2026 African Passport Ranking published by IziVisas, only 10 African passports provide access to more than 50 destinations without requiring travelers to obtain a traditional visa in advance.
The ranking measures the number of destinations that citizens can enter either visa-free or by obtaining a visa on arrival.
The index was compiled using data from official government sources, including foreign ministries, eVisa portals, and centralized Schengen information, covering 184 destinations with published entry requirements as of July 2026.
The latest rankings reveals the significant disparity in travel freedom across the continent. Seychelles retained its position as Africa's most powerful passport, providing access to 114 destinations without a prior visa (94 visa-free and 20 through visa on arrival) making it the only African passport with access to well over 100 destinations and placing it 55th globally.
