File photo: PoK unrestThe situation in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (POK) remains volatile amid mass civilian unrest, election-related violence, and heavy crackdowns by Pakistani security forces. According to sources, Pakistani forces used lethal force against Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) during their long march from Rawalakot to Muzaffarabad.The crackdown reportedly resulted in the deaths of 20 civilians and left over 33 protesters injured.Amnesty International USA said that the disturbing reports emerging from Rawalakot were consistent with Pakistani authorities’ “long history of unlawful violence against protesters”. “We urge the Pakistani authorities torestore all communications access and allow media and independent observers into the area,” it said.While security forces continue to maintain a heightened presence in Rawalakot, Muzaffarabad and other areas, sources said the possibility of additional protests remains high over the coming days because of declining public confidence in the political process.Local authorities have also continued to impose communication blackouts and suspended services across POK.
