The JAAC, a civil rights group, was attempting to march towards the regional capital, Muzaffarabad, demanding subsidised food prices and the abolition of specific legislative assembly seats. The dispute escalated after a regional Supreme Court ruling upheld the refugee seats, which the group argues give disproportionate political influence. Overall, approximately 40 people have been killed in poll-related violence since early June, leading to the suspension of mobile and internet services and a revision of election dates.
