I’m Levi Weaver — welcome to The Windup!Trade Deadline: 🎵 Buy buy buy 🎵By my count, there are six middle-ground teams in the AL and four in the NL that could justifiably buy or sell. But one such team has simplified the math a bit: After last year’s “fire sale” deadline, the Twins are officially buyers, general manager Jeremy Zoll said.While they’ve been better than expected this year, the Twins’ record — 54-54 after a 3-2 walk-off win over the Royals last night — is only one factor in the decision. As far back as spring training, owner Tom Pohlad said he hoped to buy at the deadline, knowing he had to rebuild the trust of both players and fans.From Dan Hayes’ story last night:“We’ve got to be willing to make investments and make bold moves that allow us to be successful in the playoffs,” Pohlad said earlier this month. “This is a ‘build-and-they-will-come’ situation. The fans are not going to come back based on words. They’re going to come back once they see investment in the team and success on the field. I know that.”But in spring, Pohlad’s words felt more like delusion than reality. Per Spotrac, the Twins’ free-agency spending this winter ranked 23rd, out of the 30 teams.It wasn’t an immediate return to relevance. The Twins had losing records in March, April and May, and were just 14-13 in June. But since July 1, they’re 13-8, which — all together now — in this year’s American League, is good enough to put them just a half-game out of a wild-card spot.
