Metaplanet, the Tokyo-listed company that has essentially become Japan’s answer to MicroStrategy, is moving forward with its Bitbonds offering. The product carries a 4% interest rate and is designed to do exactly what you’d expect: raise capital to buy more Bitcoin.

Project Nova and the Bitbonds blueprint

Metaplanet has been laying the groundwork for this moment through what it calls Project Nova. The project’s entire purpose is to create Bitcoin-backed financial instruments aimed at Japanese investors.

A critical piece of the puzzle fell into place when Metaplanet acquired brokerage firm Siiibo Securities for approximately ¥2.1 billion, roughly $13 million. That deal closed in June 2026, and the brokerage has since been rebranded as Metaplanet Securities.

The acquisition gave Metaplanet a Type-1 securities license, which is required in Japan for structuring and distributing financial products like bonds.
