More people are living into their 90s and will need support for longer, official figures have shown.
The number of people aged 90 and over has soared by 54 per cent to around 580,000 over the past two decades, according to new official figures for England and Wales.
There were also some 15,000 centenarians by 2025, up 90 per cent over the same period, the Office for National Statistics revealed.
It comes as Prime Minister Andy Burnham launched a new attempt to fix social care in a speech on Wednesday.
Burnham admitted previous Governments have failed to get a grip on the care system, and vowed to find a political consensus and win public backing for how it is delivered and funded in future.
