Coventry City are closing in on a deal to sign goalkeeper Carl Rushworth for a club-record fee from Brighton & Hove Albion.Rushworth, who spent last season on loan at Coventry, is expected to join for an initial fee of £22.5million ($29.9m).As first reported by The Telegraph, that figure could rise to £30m once add-ons and instalments are taken into account. Brighton have also negotiated a sell-on clause and buy-back option as part of the agreement.Rushworth, an ever-present in Frank Lampard’s title-winning side last campaign, has been Coventry’s priority signing this summer after winning the club’s fans’ player of the season, players’ player of the season and young player of the season awards.Coventry submitted an opening bid for Rushworth on June 12 but it was rejected. They have continued to push to get a deal over the line.Rushworth joined Brighton from non-league Halifax Town in 2019, but he never made an appearance for the first team. Before his Coventry spell, he had loans at Worthing, Walsall, Lincoln City, Swansea City and Hull City. The 25-year-old has found opportunities hard to come by at Brighton, where Bart Verbruggen is first choice, with Jason Steele as back-up. Rushworth has been eager to prove himself in the Premier League and play regular first-team football. The Englishman’s arrival would be Coventry’s fourth signing of the summer window. Earlier this month, Coventry announced the signing of Switzerland international centre-back Aurele Amenda for around £17m from Eintracht Frankfurt, setting a new transfer record by surpassing the €9million (£7.7m; $10.25m) paid to Antalyaspor for U.S. striker Haji Wright in August 2023.They have also brought in French winger Loum Tchaouna from Burnley, while defensive midfielder Frank Onyeka’s loan move was made permanent following promotion.Coventry, who returned to the Premier League following a 25-year absence, kick off their campaign with a trip to champions Arsenal on Friday, August 21, in the first match of the season.
