South African ocean lovers of all ages are gearing up to dive into a nationwide wave of celebration this Saturday, 1 August, as the country hosts the official global launch of Marine Protected Areas (MPA) Day. Packed with thrilling coastal adventures, interactive workshops, and virtual challenges, this year’s bumper programme proves that you do not need to live by the beach to become a champion for our seas.
From guided snorkelling through ancient kelp forests to high-energy beach runs across towering sand dunes, the annual event highlights the crucial role marine sanctuaries play in safeguarding marine wildlife and fighting climate change. Designed to inspire the next generation of environmental leaders, activities cater to all interests, whether you are an avid adventurer or an inland eco-warrior.
"MPA Day aims to include everyone, from every walk of life, no matter where they live — because the health of our oceans affects us all," explained Dr Judy Mann-Lang, Founder of MPA Day and marine expert at the Two Oceans Aquarium.
"The day’s activities are designed to inspire all ages and interests, with online activities connecting those who live far from the ocean as well. Even if you can’t participate directly, we encourage you to do whatever you can — create awareness, reduce plastic use, or pick up litter — because every small act works towards our great goal of protecting the ocean."
