MANILA, Philippines – Environmental groups BAN Toxics and EcoWaste Coalition reject President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.’s proposal to adopt waste-to-energy (WTE) technologies during his fifth State of the Nation Address (Sona), citing toxic risks.
In a statement on Wednesday, BAN Toxics Deputy Executive Director Jam Lorenzo opposed plans to amend the 25-year-old Ecological Solid Waste Management Act (RA 9003) to accommodate Waste-to-Energy (WTE) technology.
“One systemic intervention is to update our 25-year-old Ecological Solid Waste Management Act, aligning it with modern waste management practices, such as waste-to-energy and waste treatment technology,” the President said during his Sona.READ: Modern solid waste management practices pushed
Lorenzo said that burning waste produces toxic byproducts, including dioxins, furans, hazardous ash, and pollutants, without addressing the root causes of the waste crisis.
