A group of South African women is taking on HYROX Cape Town, a global fitness race combining running and functional workouts, to prove it isn’t just for elite athletes but for everyday women too.

Broadcaster, mental fitness coach and multiple HYROX finisher Liezel van der Westhuizen will join Caroline Matsimela and members of the Matsimela Ladies Clinic in the Corporate Challenge Women’s Relay at HYROX Cape Town this August.

The relay team, made up of Matsimela, Amanda Sibidla, Lilian Zingitwa and Van der Westhuizen, hopes to encourage more women to embrace fitness without feeling intimidated by the highly competitive image often associated with the global event.

“Every time HYROX content appears online, we mostly see the professionals, the elite athletes with elite performances. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with celebrating excellence, but that isn’t the complete picture,” said Van der Westhuizen.

“The majority of people entering HYROX are everyday individuals pushing themselves outside their comfort zones. They’re encouraging one another, celebrating every finish and proving that showing up is already a victory. That’s the story we want to tell.”
