Ian Beale in EastEnders was chucked in jail this week, but why is he in prison and is he leaving after decades on the BBC soap? Actor Adam Woodyatt's soap fate may be revealed13:13, 29 Jul 2026Updated 13:13, 29 Jul 2026Ian Beale is in prison on EastEnders, and the plot has left fans fearing actor Adam Woodyatt will leave the BBC One soap. But why is Ian in jail, and is he leaving the show for good? A future scene has already seemingly given away his fate, amid him coming face-to-face with killer Gray Atkins in prison.Ian was jailed this week after appearing in court, facing charges over the accidental hit and run that injured Jordan Fox. Jordan's mother Chelsea Fox was hiding her own guilt, after she shouted at her son, leading to him fleeing and being hit by the car.Ian genuinely didn't even know that he'd struck Jordan with the back of his car, hence him driving off. Jordan, aged four, was left with life-changing spinal injuries, which have left him using a wheelchair.Earlier this week Ian had asked Chelsea to help him in court, hoping for a more lenient verdict. But this didn't happen and Ian was told he would be going straight to jail. He's been sentenced to eight months in prison for his crime, and of course he's now set to come face-to-face with Jordan's killer dad Gray, amid Gray and his gran Sheila's mystery plan for Chelsea and Jordan. But will Ian stay in prison, and is he leaving the show?It seems not, as a scene set to air later on has confirmed his fate. Fans will remember that in the flashforward episode that aired in January, Ian featured heavily and was definitely not in jail. This scene was set on New Year's Day 2027. That means Ian will be out by then and will be back in Walford, in time for Max Branning's potential wedding. With Ian's sentence being eight months from July, he definitely doesn't serve the full term given he's out by January 1. So will Chelsea manage to help him after all, and will he leave prison soon?Or will Ian be in jail for a while yet, meaning a possible exit for actor Adam? New spoilers will reveal all soon but for now, Ian is going nowhere in terms of prison, but also screen time.He will be on the show despite being locked up. So there you have it, prison stretch or a release, Ian is going nowhere - as confirmed by the flashforward episode months ago. This has not stopped fans fretting about the soap future of the legacy character though! But fear not, Ian is here to stay... for now.Article continues belowEastEnders airs Mondays to Thursdays at 7:30pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer. * Follow Mirror Celebs and TV on TikTok , Snapchat , Instagram , Twitter , Facebook , YouTube and Threads .
