Iranian media reported on July 27 that the Board of Directors of the Football Federation of the Islamic Republic of Iran (FFIRI) held a meeting regarding what was termed a “long-term contract extension” for Amir Ghalenoei as head coach of the national football team.
According to published reports, apart from Mehdi Taj and Mehdi Mohammad Nabi, the president and first vice president of the federation, respectively, the remaining board members opposed extending Ghalenoei’s contract through the end of the 2030 World Cup. They set two primary conditions for approving and signing any new deal.
An informed source within the Football Federation told IranWire that, following the meeting, which dragged on until midnight, Amir Ghalenoei sent a direct message to federation executives through an intermediary:
“I do not receive my appointment from you, so I do not have to accept your conditions or provide guarantees. Someone else, in another place, writes my contract.”
