The WCED announces an increase of 151 educator posts for the 2027 school year.
The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) is set to enhance its teaching staff by adding 151 new teachers for the upcoming 2027 school year, increasing the total number of educators to 37 013.
WCED spokesperson, Bronagh Hammond, explained how the framework will work:
“The WCED is pleased to announce an increase of 151 posts in the educator post basket for the 2027 school year, for a total of 37 013 posts. This brings the total number of educator posts added in the province since 2025 to 1 898.”
The WCED cut 2 407 teaching posts effective January 2025, citing a R3.8 billion budget shortfall over three years because national funding only covered 64% of a nationally negotiated wage agreement.
