NextEra Energy and Brookfield are reportedly teaming up to build a $100 billion data campus in Kentucky, a project that, if confirmed, would rank among the most ambitious digital infrastructure bets ever placed on American soil.

The AI power problem is getting expensive

NextEra Energy, one of the largest utility companies in the US, has been aggressively positioning itself as the power provider of choice for the data center boom. The company announced a partnership with Google Cloud in December 2025 and has laid out plans to build 15 gigawatts of new power generation capacity for data centers by 2035. For context, 15 gigawatts is enough to power roughly 11 million homes.

Brookfield, meanwhile, has been quietly assembling one of the world’s largest data center portfolios. The firm operates campuses through its Compass and Data4 platforms, managing over 1.6 gigawatts of contracted capacity. Brookfield’s leadership has been blunt about what’s holding back AI growth: electricity availability is the primary bottleneck.
