Claro Puerto Rico will invest $35 million in the construction of a second landing station for the AMX-1 submarine cable, a project designed to strengthen the resilience of the island’s telecommunications infrastructure and ensure greater continuity of connectivity services.
The new landing station will complement the existing infrastructure and allow for the diversification of international data traffic routes, reducing dependence on a single access point and improving the ability to respond to incidents or natural disasters that could affect the network.
The initiative is part of the company’s strategy to reinforce Puerto Rico’s critical infrastructure amid growing demand for bandwidth driven by cloud services, artificial intelligence, and the expansion of data centers.
The project involves the construction of a second landing station for the AMX-1 system, América Móvil’s submarine cable that connects the United States, Mexico, Central America, Colombia, Brazil, Puerto Rico, and other Latin American markets.
Having a second entry point will allow traffic to be distributed across different routes and minimize the risk of outages caused by infrastructure failures or extreme weather events—a particularly important consideration for Puerto Rico given its exposure to hurricanes.
