Chennai: The BJP has assured the people of all Cauvery basin states that the Centre will continue to act strictly in accordance with the law, CWMA, and will not allow any project that adversely affects water sharing.Stating that the BJP firmly stands by the consistent and responsible position taken by the Union government and the Ministry of Jal Shakti on the Mekedatu project, TN BJP spokesperson Narayanan Thirupathy, said, "In August 2021, then Union Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat had clearly informed the Lok Sabha that the Detailed Project Report (DPR) of the Mekedatu project cannot be considered for further assessment without the acceptance and clearance of the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA).""This was based on the explicit conditions laid down by the Central Water Commission (CWC) screening committee in its in-principle clearance of 24 October 2018, which stated that acceptance of the CWMA would be a pre-requisite for consideration of the DPR by the advisory committee," he said in a release on late Tuesday.Read More: Priyanka Gandhi asks PM, Shah: 'Were students terrorists?' Slams crackdown during anti-paper leak Bill debateThirupathy said the recent clarification given by the Minister of State for Jal Shakti in Parliament to a question raised by member of Parliament Anbumani Ramdoss on 27 July 2026 only restates the legal position emerging from the Supreme Court's 16 February 2018 judgment, namely that the apex court order does not expressly mandate prior consent of other riparian states for constructing a structure within Karnataka's territory."However, this does not mean that the project can proceed unilaterally or in violation of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal Award as modified by the Supreme Court," he said, adding, "the CWMA continues to be the statutory body responsible for implementing the award and any revised DPR submitted by Karnataka will still have to undergo technical appraisal by the CWC, during which the views of the CWMA on conformity with the Award will be mandatory."The BJP spokesperson also said the CWMA, comprising representatives of all stakeholder states, will not allow any project that adversely affects the water share, regulated releases, or the rights of the lower riparian states as fixed by the tribunal and the Supreme Court.Read More: SC closes criminal case against former PM Manmohan Singh in coal block allocation case"The Central government remains committed to the equitable implementation of the Cauvery Award," he said and claimed, "No project that violates the award or harms the interests of any co-basin state will be permitted."
