The Nigeria Police Force had said the enforcement exercise was aimed at curbing criminal activities linked to the abuse of dealer plates, including armed robbery, kidnapping and other offences, while urging officers to carry out the operation professionally and within the confines of the law.
A Lagos resident, Solomon Lagoke, has accused police officers attached to Ajiwe Police Station in the Ajah area of the state of allegedly threatening him with AK-47 rifles, falsely branding him a kidnapper and extorting ₦100,000 while enforcing the Inspector-General of Police's directive on the use of dealer number plates.
The allegation comes weeks after the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, directed police commands nationwide to intensify enforcement against the misuse of dealer number plates, warning that the plates are meant strictly for licensed vehicle dealers and should not be used on vehicles in private possession or for personal transportation.
