The US and Saudi Arabia have signed a nuclear cooperation agreement that has been two decades in the making.
Signed on 22 July by US Secretary of Energy Chris Wright and Saudi Minister of Energy Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman al-Saud, the pact pairs a “peaceful nuclear co-operation agreement” with a separate bilateral safeguards agreement.
Secretary Wright described the arrangement as one that upholds the “highest standards of nuclear safety and non-proliferation”.
The deal is expected to run for around 30 years and could be worth tens of billions of US dollars to American firms.
Westinghouse Electric Company has been named as a likely partner, with its CEO Dan Sumner calling the agreement a step that “strengthens energy security” and expands opportunities for US industry.
