Promising results keep pouring in for GLP-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RA).
A study in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism explored the effects of these agents on people with cancer and type 2 diabetes. GLP-1RAs were previously reported to decrease cancer incidence, but less is known about their efficacy in helping patients with active cancer. For the current study, researchers identified a cohort of 3,747 patients with type 2 diabetes who received GLP-1RAs within 3 months of starting systemic cancer therapy and 52,061 patients receiving metformin in the same timeframe.
Two of the paper co-authors, Aditya Mahadevan, MD, and Zoe Quandt, MD -- both physician-researchers at the University of California San Francisco -- spoke with the Reading Room about the study. The exchange was edited for length and clarity.
