Meret co-convened a session and gave an invited talk at this year's Goldschmidt conference in Montréal.Meret convened the session Redox Controls on Contaminant and Nutrient Cycling Across Scales, which brought together contributions on how redox processes drive element cycling, mineral transformation, and organic matter turnover across Earth's critical zone. The session focused on translating molecular-scale mechanisms of electron transfer and mineral–organic matter coupling into an understanding of dynamic, spatially and temporally variable redox conditions in real environments, spanning contaminant and nutrient mobility, greenhouse gas fluxes, and new analytical and modeling approaches that connect laboratory, field, and global scales.In a separate session on Integrating Biological and Geochemical Perspectives on Trace Metal(loid) Transformations Across Ecosystems, Meret gave an invited talk presenting work by Xinru Liu, Vineeth Pothanamkandathil, and Lorenz Schwab on the kinetics of manganese oxide reduction. The talk, Quantifying Thermodynamic and Structural Controls on Manganese Oxide Reduction Kinetics, addressed how thermodynamic driving forces and mineral structure together govern the rate at which these abundant, redox-active minerals are reduced — a question with broad relevance to carbon, nutrient, and contaminant cycling in soils and sediments.
