Estimates vary as to how many Confederate memorials exist in America and how many of them have been removed. These memorials were not, in most cases, organic products of “history”; almost all of these memorials were directly or indirectly a result of efforts by the United Daughters of the Confederacy to romanticize “the Lost Cause” in order to undo legal protections of Reconstruction.
