A suspected member of a migrant-smuggling ring has been arrested near Thessaloniki driving a car with two people stuffed into the luggage compartment to avoid detection, police said Tuesday.

The suspect, only identified as a 22-year-old foreign national, lacked a driving license, a police statement said.

Monday night’s incident near the village of Gerakarou, some 35 kilometers east of Thessaloniki, came among a spate of arrests of suspected migrant-smugglers near Greece’s northeastern border with Turkey.

Tens of thousands of people from the Middle East, the Indian subcontinent and Africa enter Greece every year seeking a better life in other European Union member states, and the country is currently the main gateway to the 27-nation block for irregular immigration.
