Russia is said to be seeking the extradition of an alleged organized crime boss arrested in Dubai, a move that could complicate Greece’s efforts to bring him to trial on charges linked to organized crime and a string of high-profile killings, Kathimerini understands.
According to sources familiar with the case, Russian authorities argue that the suspect’s life would be at risk if he were sent to Greece. It remains unclear whether the competing request, as well as the suspect’s reported dual citizenship, will affect Greece’s extradition bid.
Greek authorities were officially notified Monday by the United Arab Emirates of the arrest of the suspect, known by the nickname Edik, about three weeks after unconfirmed reports of his detention first surfaced. Authorities believe the group’s alleged deputy, known as Leonidas, was also arrested. Both men were the subjects of Interpol Red Notices.
Greek investigators allege the pair led a criminal network made up largely of ethnic Greeks from former Soviet states that was involved in extortion, kidnappings, bombings, cigarette smuggling and contract killings. The organization was uncovered in early 2024 during a joint investigation by the police’s homicide division and organized crime force.
