Five Greek rural communities are eyeing a spot in the UN Tourism organization’s network of Best Tourism Villages, joining more than 300 destinations worldwide that are recognized for preserving their cultural heritage, supporting local communities and promoting sustainable tourism.
Known for its golden beach and tamarisk trees beneath a hill crowned by the chapel of Agia Pakou, Galissas on the western coast of Syros has preserved the island’s fishing traditions and rich culinary heritage, despite its popularity. It “combines natural beauty, history, a beach, local traditions, rural life, gastronomy, accessibility and residents who genuinely care for their community,” the island’s municipal authority, which submitted the bid, said.

It has succeeded in preserving a relaxed way of life centered on a model of sustainable, low-impact tourism. Its nomination is also part of a broader strategic plan by the municipality of Ermionida aimed at promoting tourism and strengthening the local economy by highlighting its cultural heritage and productive traditions.
