Coal India shares declined over 3 per cent on Tuesday following the company’s Q1FY27 results, as brokerages flagged weak operating performance, higher costs and weaker-than-expected realisations. The stock traded at ₹414.65 on the NSE at 10.15 am.State-run coal behemoth reported a marginal 0.7 per cent y-o-y increase in consolidated net profit to ₹8,849.81 crore for the first quarter of this fiscal. Its total income and total expenditure rose around 8 per cent and 12 per cent y-o-y, respectively.Jefferies maintained a buy rating on Coal India with a target price of ₹500. Jefferies said a recovery in power demand, potentially boosted further by a weak monsoon, is likely to aid Coal India’s volumes in FY27. After a 12 per cent EPS fall over FY24-26, it expects Coal India’s earnings trajectory to improve with a 6 per cent CAGR over FY26-29.Citi maintained a neutral rating, while lowering its target price to ₹430 from ₹440. It said volume trends remain muted and there is likely limited upside to e-auction prices given inventory in the system.JPMorgan maintained a neutral recommendation with a target price of ₹430, compared with its earlier target of ₹435. It said Q1FY27 adjusted EBITDA was below estimates and sees downside risks for international coal prices going forward. JPMorgan also noted that Coal India’s inventory remains slightly higher than last year’s levels and said the company is likely to face cost headwinds from a potential wage revision in FY27.Morgan Stanley maintained an equal-weight recommendation with a target price of ₹420. It cited weak operating numbers, with both FSA and e-auction realisations weaker than expected, while opex was on the higher side.
