Sir, – I was saddened to see that your GAA correspondent Seán Moran is retiring. It is well earned. Like his predecessor Paddy Downey, he belongs in that great pantheon of sports journalists that not only The Irish Times has produced, but other broadsheets also. Moran came from a generation that believed the game was of the utmost importance and they never sought to put it at risk for the sake of a headline. Like rugby’s Edmund van Esbeck or soccer’s Peter Byrne, they were the “doyen” of sports journalism. They were thought-provoking; you knew they were doing their jobs properly because they gave opinions that made us all uncomfortable or indeed highly indignant.However, it was never personal and it was also at a time before the toxicity of social media, where an honest opinion can be greeted with personal abuse and hatred.
