This is what you need to know about the monthly HIV prevention pill, Alimatravir.

By now, South Africans may have seen headlines about a new once-a-month HIV prevention pill but world experts say the medicine is still undergoing clinical trials and is not yet available for public use.

The news comes after an agreement between Aspen Pharmacare and US pharmaceutical company MSD.

The agreement announced by Aspen and MSD aims to expand access to the investigational medicine, known as alimatravir, across Africa if it is approved by regulators.

Aspen said it plans to manufacture, market and distribute the medicine on the continent, supporting efforts to improve access to HIV prevention technologies.
