Orlando Pirates have built one of the strongest squads in South African football over the past two seasons, but one area has continued to raise questions — the number nine position.
The arrival of Norwegian striker Sebastian Pedersen suggests the Betway Premiership champions believe they have identified the missing piece ahead of what promises to be another demanding campaign.
On paper, Pirates already possess three recognised centre-forwards in Evidence Makgopa, Yanela Mbuthuma and Boitumelo Radiopane. Each offers a different profile, but last season also highlighted why another striker became a necessity rather than a luxury.
Makgopa cemented himself as one of Hugo Broos’ strikers for Bafana Bafana and remained an important figure for Pirates with his relentless pressing, intelligent movement and ability to stretch opposition defences. Yet, despite leading the line for much of the season, he was unable to reach double figures in goals across all competitions.
