Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei has reaffirmed Tehran’s backing for Hezbollah, saying Iran has made the preservation of Lebanon’s territorial integrity and the complete and unconditional end of Israeli military action there the primary condition of its memorandum of understanding with the United States to end the war, according to a letter published by Iranian state media on Sunday.

The letter was issued in response to a message of allegiance and loyalty sent by Hezbollah Secretary-General Naim Qassem and the militia’s fighters.

Addressing Qassem and Hezbollah’s fighters, Khamenei said supporting the Lebanese militia remained a strategic policy for Iran and praised Hezbollah for what he described as its role in confronting Israel.

Iran is Hezbollah’s main political, financial and military backer, having supported the militia since its founding in the early 1980s.
