MANILA, Philippines — With President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s renewed push for nuclear energy during his penultimate State of the Nation Address (Sona) on Monday, Senator Risa Hontiveros raised concerns over nuclear waste and dependence on imported materials while Senate Majority Leader Juan Miguel Zubiri said it was time for the Philippines to explore the said energy source.
In an ambush interview following Marcos’ Sona, Hontiveros said she remains opposed to nuclear energy, an issue she said prompted her to become an activist when she was still in high school.
“Until now, I’m sorry, but I still don’t agree,” Hontiveros said.
