They provide almost 50 billion hours of care every year, which would equate to more than $1 trillion in value if they received a wage of just over $20 an hour, according to AARP’s Valuing the Invaluable 2026 report.
That makes individuals caring for people with cancer, particularly with advanced malignancies, “clinical partners,” J. Nicholas Odom, PhD, RN, associate professor in the School of Nursing at The University of Alabama at Birmingham, told Healio.
“They’re delivering the majority of care when their loved ones are not in the hospital,” he said. “They are the continuity figure for this patient with cancer over time.
