The Biodance Jelly Serum MistsBiodance The beauty industry was practically built on before-and-after images. Skin transformations are constantly caught on camera, illustrating smoother foreheads and tighter jawlines after a few weeks of using a buzzy product. But the metamorphosis of Mihwa Kim, the Founder and CPO of viral K-beauty brand Biodance, is on another level. A serious car accident outside her home in 2013 caused her to suffer severe injuries to her face and facial tissue, as well as burns on her chin and neck, so she underwent surgery that required more than 60 stitches. In her ‘before’ image, her face is covered in stitches, swollen and battered, and one eye is so injured it can’t open. But in the ‘after’ photo, her skin is absolutely flawless and smooth, with nary a scar in sight.“The recovery wasn’t just physical,” Kim says. “At the time, my career involved working in front of the camera as a beauty show host, so the injuries to my face deeply affected my confidence and left me devastated about my future. For the next six months, helping my skin recover became my entire focus. I avoided sunlight and even water whenever possible to minimize irritation. I changed the medical-grade hydrogel scar patches prescribed by my doctor several times a day, doing everything I could to prevent scarring. Even after those six intensive months, the journey wasn’t over. I continued scar treatments for another two to three years. Because I wanted to find a faster and more effective path to recovery, I tried everything to support the skin’s recovery process, from scar patches, silicone patches and ointments to countless skincare products.”Mihwa Kim, the Founder and CPO of Biodance, examining a hydrogel mask in the labBiodanceAfter experimenting with all those healing options, it was medical-grade hydrogel that captured Kim’s attention. “Through my own recovery, I experienced how hydrogel creates and maintains the optimal moist environment that allows the skin to recover naturally,” she says. “That experience made me realize just how essential the right environment is for the skin to restore itself.”That’s why hydrogel is the foundation of Biodance, the brand Kim was inspired to launch after her healing journey. In fact, the biggest thing that changed after the accident was the way she thought about skincare. “Before then, I believed good skincare was all about finding better ingredients,” she says. “But going through my own recovery completely changed that perspective.I realized that healthy skin doesn't come from applying more products or forcing dramatic changes. It comes from creating the right environment for the skin to recover on its own. I also realized that efficacy and gentleness don't have to be a trade-off. The best skincare delivers visible results without putting unnecessary stress on the skin.”The Biodance collagen collectionBiodanceAt the time, it was difficult to find products that offered both. “Medical-grade products delivered clear results but were not always convenient to use, while cosmetics were easy to incorporate into my routine but didn’t deliver the results I was looking for,” Kim says. “That’s when I realized that skincare should not require people to choose between efficacy and everyday usability. It should deliver both, and that belief remains one of the most important principles guiding how we develop products today.”When Kim couldn’t find what she needed on the market, she created it herself. The name Biodance was inspired by the idea “Balance In Our Guidance.” “At Biodance, we have one core belief: skincare shouldn't force the skin to change,” Kim says. “Instead, it should guide the skin toward restoring its own natural, healthy balance. That’s why ‘balance’ represents the skin’s healthiest state, while ‘guidance’ reflects our role in helping the skin find its way back to that balance. The name Biodance reflects our philosophy of creating skincare that helps the skin restore its healthiest balance on its own.” By November 2023, Biodance was ranked number one in the facial mask category on Amazon and still holds the top spot, plus the brand also is number one in online mask sales at Sephora.Biodance Collagen Toner Pads in the labBiodanceHydrogel remains at the center of Biodance and the brand aims to make hydrogel products more user-friendly and comfortable to use so that it can easily integrate into anyone’s everyday routine. “To me, hydrogel is more than just a product,” Kim says. “It represents a way of understanding the skin. I don’t see it simply as a material for masks, but as a skincare delivery platform that helps the skin to maintain its healthiest state.”One of their latest launches, the Biodance Eye Patches in Vita Niacinamide, fulfills that mission by bringing the brand’s hydrogel technology into a format that’s truly optimized for the delicate eye area. Niacinamide is still trending, but they took choosing the best ingredients a step further by pairing it with the right delivery environment to maximize efficacy.“The skin around the eyes is the thinnest on the face and constantly in motion, so it requires a completely different approach from a hydrogel face mask,” Kim says. “We redesigned our hydrogel 3D matrix structure to make it more flexible and introduced a diamond-pattern structure that allows the patches to adhere closely and evenly around the eyes. As a result, we created eye patches that effectively deliver active ingredients to the targeted area while sitting comfortably on the skin without causing discomfort.”Biodance products In the R&D facilityBiodanceThough hydrogel masks have flooded shelves, Biodance was one of the earliest pioneers of the now K-beauty staple. “It represents the very beginning of our brand, the hydrogel technology that helped my own skin recover and the philosophy that continues to guide everything we create,” Kim says. “To me, it is more than our bestsellers. It is the product that best represents who we are as a brand. Despite the competition, I believe Biodance has continued to earn consumers’ loyalty not simply because we use hydrogel, but because of how deeply we understand hydrogel and how we’ve translated that understanding into our products.” Kim has long believed that hydrogel technology should extend beyond masks, which is why the Jelly Serum Mist was created. “This mist was born from our desire to make the hydrogel experience easier, more accessible and more seamlessly integrated into everyday life,” she says. “Unlike a conventional liquid mist, it is a solidified hydrogel that transforms into an ultrafine mist as it is dispensed. I think of it as a ‘sprayable hydrogel mask.’ By bringing the benefits of hydrogel beyond the traditional mask format and making them easier to use every day, I believe this product represents the future of Biodance.” That future includes Biodance expanding into more global retailers very soon, including a wider presence in Sephora locations in the US.Kim with the Biodance Jelly Serum MistBiodanceWhen Kim was a beauty show host on TV, it gave her a foundation to helm her brand because she personally tested and introduced thousands of beauty products. “Every time I prepared for a TV show, I would compare dozens of products within the same category, and constantly analyze why some delivered visible improvements to the skin while others didn’t,” she says. “This was never just a part of my job. Whenever a new product launched, I wanted to be the first to try it and I genuinely enjoyed researching products and reading reviews from real users. Beauty wasn’t just my profession, it was my passion as well. That experience taught me more than how to sell products. It helped me develop my own standards from the consumer’s perspective and identify what makes a good product. So, when I founded Biodance, my first question was not, ‘What will sell?’ but rather, ‘What kind of product will help people genuinely experience a visible change in their skin?’” That question still guides every product the brand develops, whether it's a mask, a mist, an eye patch, or a cream. As the K-beauty space in the US has become so crowded, it’s become harder and harder for brands to stand out. “With so much competition, I don’t believe that a new ingredient or eye-catching marketing tactic alone is enough for consumers to choose your brand anymore,” Kim says. “From the beginning, I wanted Biodance’s products to speak for themselves. Rather than asking consumers to believe the marketing, I wanted them to try our products, experience a visible difference for themselves and let that experience naturally spread to others. I truly believe the product that works is the most powerful form of marketing. The reason Biodance has been able to grow is because our products earned consumers' trust before anything else.”
