The 29-year-old, a free agent after mutually parting ways with Real Madrid, was a marquee target for the Dutch club. Now he’s likely heading elsewhere, with Real Betis circling like a patient vulture.
What happened with the Ceballos deal
Ajax’s interest in Ceballos was no casual flirtation. New manager Míchel identified the midfielder as a key piece for rebuilding the club’s engine room. Ceballos, who became available after his Real Madrid contract was mutually terminated in mid-2026, represented the kind of technical, experienced signing that could anchor a midfield transition.
Free agents aren’t actually free. The absence of a transfer fee gets offset by inflated wage demands, signing bonuses, and agent fees. Ceballos’ salary expectations reportedly exceeded what Ajax was willing to commit, and questions lingered about whether the player was truly sold on moving to the Eredivisie.
