July 26 (UPI) -- German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt on Sunday identified the suspect accused of driving a car through a Pride event as Abdul Ballout, an alleged supporter of the Islamic State militant group.

Dobrindt described the deadly assault as an "Islamist terrorist attack" during a news conference near the site of the incident in Tiergarten Park in Berlin, The New York Times reported.

"Everything we have seen so far indicates that we are dealing with an Islamist terrorist attack," he said. "We know that the suspect, Abdul Ballout, is on the run.

"This is a crucial point, because it means all police forces are engaged in a major manhunt."
