The recent rise of the Democratic Socialists of America is shocking to many, but its rise in popularity coincides with Generation Z’s turnout and involvement in politics.
Gen Z was the backbone of the mayoral election of Zohran Mamdani in New York City, with nearly 75% of Gen Z voting for Mamdani, a DSA-backed candidate. This corresponds with victories of DSA-backed candidates in Democratic primaries across the country. The DSA’s rise is linked directly to the increasing popularity of socialist economics among 18- to 26-year-olds.
The rise of socialism among Gen Z comes with an important question: Why? There are multiple factors for the growing sympathy toward socialism within Gen Z: a lack of employment opportunities, the increasing age of first-time homeowners, and rising rent prices. The current economic status quo has become an untenable situation for much of Gen Z.
These circumstances are driving a generation that shifted rightward in 2024 to socialist and communist candidates who offer any kind of promise for immediate relief.
The Republican Party’s answer to socialism’s rise must include an attempt to win back Gen Z voters by offering a clear answer to the problems plaguing them the most, primarily the issue of affordability. Recently on Joe Rogan’s podcast, Vice President JD Vance discussed a possible solution, which emphasized the need for an economic middle ground and a return to “Christian economics” among conservatives.
