Suspended EMPD deputy chief Brigadier Julius Mkhwanazi insists he remains innocent until proven guilty and says calls for him to step aside are politically motivated as he fights multiple criminal cases and disciplinary proceedings.
Suspended Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) deputy chief Brigadier Julius Mkhwanazi has told IOL that he is innocent until proven guilty and believes it would be unfair to expect him to step aside while he faces three criminal cases, saying it would give his "detractors" what they want.
Mkhwanazi said this through his legal team in response to questions from IOL.
The embattled metro police officer continues to face extensive legal challenges, including multiple criminal charges and an ongoing investigation by the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry.
He joined the EMPD in 2003 and rose through the ranks to become deputy chief.
