In Ogun State, that timeless reality is finding fresh expression in the increasingly frosty relationship between Senator Solomon Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, and former Senator Iyabo Obasanjo.
What once appeared to be a partnership anchored on shared political aspirations has now degenerated into one of the state’s most intriguing power struggles, with both camps locked in an unrelenting war of narratives as the race for the 2027 governorship steadily gathers steam.
Only months ago, both political heavyweights stood on the same side of the All Progressives Congress (APC) divide. Obasanjo had openly pursued the party’s governorship ticket before eventually stepping aside when influential stakeholders rallied behind Yayi as the preferred consensus choice. The decision was celebrated in many quarters as a triumph of party unity and strategic compromise. Political insiders now say unresolved grievances quietly lingered.
The calm finally shattered when she publicly accused Yayi of failing to honour understandings allegedly reached during the consensus negotiations. Yayi has, however, responded with equal firmness, insisting that no such commitments were made and dismissing the allegations as entirely without foundation.
