The US president made the comments at the White House Correspondents' dinner on Friday night, where he also took aim at the 'fake news media' and joked about celebrity supporter Nicki Minaj14:45, 25 Jul 2026Donald Trump apparently joked he will run for a third term before donning a red 'Trump 2028' campaign cap at the White House Correspondents' dinner.‌The US president, 80, is already half-way through his second term in office, the limit set by the US Constitution which says "No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice". Speaking at the black tie event on Friday night, Trump said: "I won three times, now I'm gonna do it again! It should be easy. I'm getting very good at running for president.‌"I won three times, did very well the second time by the way, a rigged election, but we don't have to talk about it." Earlier in the same speech, Trump said: "I'll run again."‌He added: "As I said three months ago, the show must go on." He added: "Just like my presidency, the second time is always better and the third time will be better yet... I'm only kidding!".It is not the first time the president has spoken about running for a third term, which although unconstitutional is not unprecedented. Franklin D. Roosevelt served four terms as president from 1933 until his death in 1945, after which the Constitution was legally changed.‌Speaking about the prospect of serving a third term during a previous interview with NBC, Trump claimed "there are methods which you could do it". At the time, he said: "I'm not joking... a lot of people want me to do it. But, I basically tell them we have a long way to go, you know, it's very early in the administration." In January, he told supporters that it would be "the greatest honour of my life to serve not once, but twice or three times or four times". But he later claimed his comments were meant as a joke for the "fake news media".Friday night's rescheduled event took place amid high security at the Waldorf Astoria Washington DC, three months after the original event at the Washington Hilton had to be postponed due to an alleged assassination attempt. Trump spoke about what he described as "the attempted mass murder" and joked pop star Nicki Minaj, who is one of his most prominent supporters, began twerking after gun shots rang out.‌He said: "After hearing the gunshots, many people yelled, 'Get down!' which caused Nicki Minaj to start twerking. Can you believe it? She's the only one that really understood what that meant."Trump also used the opportunity to make insults towards the "fake news" media, claiming: “This is really the largest group of ‘Trump Derangement Syndrome’ people put together at one time."He added: “You people have no idea how lucky you are. When I’m gone, you’re all going to be broke. Your business model is going to be finished. There’s not going to be anybody to report on. Nobody gives a damn about anybody else.
