TVTV NewsBBC BreakfastBBC Breakfast presenters Naga Munchetty and Charlie Stayt spoke to a BBC colleague who had to flee wildfires in France08:06, 25 Jul 2026BBC Breakfast's Naga Munchetty said it was "very scary" as a fellow BBC journalist revealed she had to evacuate amid the wildfires in Europe.‌Thousands of people have been told to evacuate after the break out of fires in France and Spain, with around 200,000 having to flee in south-west France.‌As Naga and co-host Charlie Stayt reported on the situation on the BBC morning show, they spoke to South Today's Joanna Kent, who had been in holiday in the Cap Ferret Peninsula when she was ordered to evacuate.‌Joanna, who has now relocated to the Loire Valley with her family, shared: "We first became aware of it later on Wednesday, about three hours after it had broken out. We were down right at the bottom of the peninsula, and we looked north towards where we were staying, and we could just see this huge plume of smoke rising up into the sky."As we cycled back up the peninsula, there was ash coming down. You could smell the smoke in the air.‌"And when we got back, I got online and I could see that the fire was burning sort of directly above the Peninsula at that point."We went down to the local beach that night, and you could just see this wall of orange flame and an apocalyptic scene flaring up with every gust of the wind."She went on: "And then I did follow the updates through the night. I could see that people were being evacuated, and it was getting closer and closer to us. So the next morning, we did wonder what would be happening to us.‌"My 10-year-old was pretty scared.
