2 Philippine macaques, 15 native birds rescued in Sorsogon

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) rescued two Philippine long-tailed macaques and 15 native birds kept in captivity in Sitio Madan-an, Barangay Bibincahan, Sorsogon, the agency said.

The Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) Sorsogon said the rescue operation was launched after the Sorsogon City Veterinary Office, through Dr. Jose Maria G. Alindogan, reported a captive primate.

During an inspection, the PENRO Sorsogon Wildlife Enforcement Team found undocumented wildlife in captivity: two Philippine long-tailed macaques (Macaca fascicularis philippensis), 12 white-eared brown doves (Phapitreron leucotis), two Philippine hanging parrots (Loriculus philippensis), and one black-chinned fruit dove (Ramphiculus leclancheri).
