WITH the local government elections set to be held in less than five months, the Auditor-General’s 2024-2025 report on local government comes at a well-timed moment.
The good thing about this Auditor-General’s report is that it gives voters food for thought, especially ahead of the elections. The next five months give the voting public plenty of time to scrutinise the performance of municipalities and that of their representatives. At least that is what one expects from voters.
Like the previous Auditor-Generals' reports on local government, this report exposes serious governance failures and challenges that should worry voters, taxpayers, and ratepayers ahead of the much-anticipated November 4 elections.
At the same time, the November elections offer voters an opportunity to start refraining from voting out of emotion and unquestioned loyalty to political parties.
