High-speed offenders - Rawthee, Govender and Makhanya - face severe penalties in KZN

The KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Department of Transport praised the 98% conviction rate achieved by prosecutors at Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court for speeding offences.

This recognition follows severe penalties imposed on three individuals caught driving at dangerously high speeds.

This week, Brian Rawthee was sentenced to a fine of R20,000 or two years in prison for driving at 179km/h. Nash Lee Govender was sentenced to a fine of R15,000 or 10 months in prison for driving at 171km/h, while Fanyana Makhanya was sentenced to a fine of R10,000 or eight months in prison for driving at 171km/h.

“All convicted motorists who were sentenced opted to pay their fines. They would have had to serve their sentences in jail had they failed," said Siboniso Duma, the MEC for Transport and Human Settlements.
