The historic Solar Impulse flight around the world 10 years ago transcended the boundaries of what is considered possible, not just for aviation, but also for a world grappling with the fallout from dependence on fossil fuels. Its legacy has spawned a vibrant new sector for electric propulsion and an endeavor to prove the viability of green hydrogen for fueling aircraft. It has also advanced Europe’s progress toward adopting cleantech solutions to promote a paradigm shift across multiple industries. Bertrand Piccard and Andre Borschberg, the two Swiss co-founders of Solar Impulse who took turns piloting the zero-emissions aircraft in 2015-16, delved into this wide-ranging legacy in an interview with Energy Intelligence.
