Michael O'Mahoney from Llandudno Primary School made history as Africa's first Rotax E10 Mini Challenge champion, securing a place at the Grand Finals in Portugal.
The Grade 6 learner claimed victory at the inaugural electric karting event held at Zwartkops International Kart Raceway on Sunday, 5 July.
Thirteen young drivers lined up on the grid for Round 1 of the Rotax E10 Mini Challenge – the first time Rotax's all-electric karts have competed on the African continent. O'Mahoney delivered an outstanding performance throughout the day, finishing on 90 points to take the overall honours and book his place at the Rotax Grand Finals, the Karting World Championships, in Portimão, Portugal, this November.
Cape Town's Ruhan Victor finished second on 84 points, while Namibia's Mandume Kaiyamo completed the podium on 80 points. Eduardo Campos of Mozambique, Adriaan Steyn and Lwashu Mathebula rounded out the top six.
