Romania shot down an unidentified drone on July 24, 2026, marking the first time the NATO member state has used kinetic force to neutralize an aerial threat in its own airspace. The incident, authorized by NATO command, involved two Romanian F-16s and two Italian Eurofighters tracking a drone that had penetrated roughly 200 kilometers inland before being engaged near the village of Padina.

The drone was first detected around 9:39 a.m. local time near Sulina on the Black Sea coast. By 11:02 a.m., it had been neutralized. That’s roughly 80 minutes of airspace violation before the threat was eliminated.
This wasn’t an isolated event. There have been over 40 similar drone incursions into Romanian airspace since the escalation of the Ukraine conflict. A prior incident on May 29, 2026, actually resulted in injuries when a drone struck in Galati, Romania, prompting Romania’s foreign minister to request accelerated NATO assistance for anti-drone capabilities.
